Surfing Kodiak between storms

By |November 28th, 2011|

As reported in my previous post, we had a pretty tough surf search around Kodiak Island early this winter with the m/v Milo. The storms were on par with the scenery, relentless and rugged. In our first few days around the island we did get to score a couple sessions when the wind momentarily settled from the near constant gales. The photos here are from a session at a spot that a couple locals suggested we check out. Gotta say, the locals were a lot friendlier than the waves we found! check out some of these angry looking faces.

Boat trip to Kodiak Island. Scenic. Stormy. Surf.

By |November 27th, 2011|

It’s no secret that Kodiak Island can be a windy place, but three weeks straight with winds gusting over 50mph? That just doesn’t seem possible! Well, fortunately we all lived to tell the story of enduring a non-stop series of epic winter storms while on a surf trip around Kodiak Island by boat.

Surfing Alaska – Valentines Day

By |July 27th, 2011|

It’s been a busy season here at Surf Alaska. We are getting stoked to fall into some epic surf adventures as the summer winds down. Until then, here is a little photo report from a session we had last winter, Valentines day in fact. Pretty nice offshore blowing, check out the snow manes flying off the mountains in the background!

Winter surf session video

By |February 22nd, 2011|

Kachemak Bay, Alaska was recently the recipient of some kind of a weather miracle. There was a wind swell coming across Cook Inlet that kept up for five days! That alone is quite a phenomena, but to take it another step into the realm of dreams – a steady offshore breeze was whistling along every day in Homer.

Slab GoPro video

By |February 8th, 2011|

If you’ve been following along here you know that we have been taking the m/v Milo out from Homer to discover new breaks on the outer coast of the Kenai Peninsula. We just returned from our fourth trip out there yesterday. This morning I put together a few clips I shot using the GoPro video camera mounted on my SUP paddle. This footage is from our third adventure out to the Gulf and our second time riding this slab wave we’ve named Pop Ups.

Sleuthing an Alaskan Slab

Iceman on a freshly discovered Alaskan slab

This was our second trip with the m/v Milo out to the Gulf of Alaska from Homer. Swell was forecasted to be something between seven and fifteen feet. The first day was windy, the swell was strong but it took us a few hours to discover a break that was sheltered from the wind coming in off the Gulf. No photos of that spot, too much excitement to get on some waves for me and try out the 10ft boardworks SUP on some real waves.

An early white Christmas

By |December 21st, 2010|

It was a slushy day out there but I didn’t see anyone complaining. Just a bunch of smiling faces. I was fortunate enough to maximize this swell and surfed all the way through a sunrise, sunset, and a moonrise. Seven hours in the water today and some incredible rides including some sweet barrels. Looks like Santa visited Homer early, I hope he’s heading your way next. That is, if he’s not going to stick around here.
