Surfing Alaska – November 18th, 2009

It’s been blowing snow for the last couple days, 4 inches this morning alone. The storm surf was epic yesterday- So epic that none of us even tried to paddle out after watching a few set waves on the Homer Spit that were about 10ft on the face. If it wasn’t 23ºF and blowing snow [...]
Aren’t we all thankful for tubes?

I’ve been looking forward to posting a few of these shots from a sunrise surf session in Alaska. Looking through them here on Thanksgiving day brought up thoughts of stuffing – stuffing tubes that is. Some nice walls, some awesome closeouts and a few perfect rides.
Surfing Alaska – October 29th, 2009

The last of a nice clean swell and a dramatic end to an early winter day. Mike and Randy got a sunset surf session in- complete with a nice offshore breeze.
Surfing Alaska – winter ’09 icebreaker

It’s been a while – But that’s the way it always feels when we start surfing again after a summer of the doldrums at my hometown break – Homer, Alaska. After spending a couple cold hours standing on the beach photographing my buddies surfing over the last week I think my SurfAlaska.net stoke has started [...]
Petrof glacier surf – pt. 2

I still haven’t even began editing the photos from our two recent trips to Petrof Glacier, but I can’t help but share a few of the images that keep catching my eye as when I take a moment to flip through the collection.
Petrof glacier surf – pt. 1

Let the story telling begin. Years of talking, drooling, hypothesizing, dreaming, thinking, imagining . . Petrof Glacier, so close yet so far away. From Homer this spot is only a 20 minute bushplane flight away. Just on the other side of those pesky mountains that so easily block the ocean swell from hitting our beaches. [...]
Surfing Seward Alaska – March 26th, ’09

A break that you can drive to in Seward? I don’t recall when or where I first heard of this, it sounded a bit mystical at the time. After making the 7hr round trip drive twice for nothing, that reputation was well established. When Mike asked if I wanted to make the trip again, I [...]
Surfing Alaska – March 24th, 2009

Just another day surfing in Alaska. . . Not many photos from this morning, I must have been heading into the water myself. Looks like there were some nice waves! The next post on here is going to be reporting on a recent trip to Seward where we scored some sweet waves.
Surfing Alaska – March 20th, 2009

Sitting out in the lineup we look at each other and smile. Yes, it’s March 20th, we are surfing for what must be the 5th time this week!? Surely, this one is our last session before the summer doldrums, yes, the honorary nod, must be, yep, better enjoy it while we can eh?
Surfing Alaska – March 16th, 2009

This is a short one. I didn’t shoot a lot of photos this morning before heading into the water, but a couple of these wave shots I know will be appreciated by the surfers out there. Will we ever tire of looking at empty waves, imagining . . . bottom turn, cut back, to the [...]
Surf Archive – January 26th, 2006

Just a little something from the archive for a flat Sunday afternoon.
Surfing Alaska – March 15, 2009

Finally back at it here on SurfAlaska.net. Thanks for your patience, and welcome to all the new followers. We just had a couple nice days of surf in Homer, Alaska over the weekend. I managed to catch some photos and some waves. After a pretty long dry spell for me, I was mostly catching waves, [...]
Surfing a Cook Inlet blizzard

Mike had been watching the weather, maybe a little too closely. The waves in Homer were suffering from a 30mph onshore wind but the buoys and weather stations had him thinking that something might be going on up the road 40 miles at the mouth of the Ninilchik River or Deep Creek. It was such [...]
Surfing Alaska – December 31, 2008

2008 ended in style for a few Alaskan surfers who spent the last moments of daylight riding glassy waist to chest high waves in slushy salt water. It was a true classic Alaskan surf session with a gorgeous winter sunset over the snow covered mountains, ice covering the beaches and floating by in the lineup, [...]
Surfing Alaska – December 28th, 2008

The swell that started the day after Christmas turned out to be one of those gifts that just keep giving, and just gets better with age! Of the 209 photos I kept from this day, below are 15 that I could not resist. The surfers reading (or are you all surfers?) can appreciate the empty [...]
Surfing Session – December 27, 2008

Two days after christmas the real holiday fun got started. The little bit of available light left during this session wasn’t good for photos, but the surfing waves were beautiful and the boys were getting after it. We’ve turned the corner on winter finally and it’s not much yet, but we are gaining daylight each [...]
Surfing Session – December 26, 2008

As predicted, we had a pretty strong surf swell in Homer, Alaska on the day after Christmas. It was actually a bit oversized for our normal breaks so we surfed a kind of funky beach break. Turned out to be some great drops, and a few nice walls to ride between heavy poundings. It was [...]
Santa is stirring up some heavy freezing spray
It’s Christmas evening and I can’t help but share a little of the cheer I’m feeling about this forecast. It is giving me goosebumps and shivers, but in a good nervous anticipation kind of way. BARREN ISLANDS AND KAMISHAK BAY WATERS 945 PM AKST THU DEC 25 2008 …STORM WARNING THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT… …HEAVY FREEZING [...]
Surfing Session – December 23 – 24, 2008

What I remember most about the 23rd surf session was the sound of wind blown water hitting the 6mm neoprence hood. It was loud. I would probably remember more if I could have opened my eyes, but that was like looking into your shower head with 35 degree saltwater on the massage setting. Ok, maybe [...]
Surfing Yakutat, Alaska 2008 – part 4

This is the fourth post reporting on a surfing trip to Yakutat from the fall of 2008. It’s the last couple days, by now we were actually getting pretty used to squirming into that cold wet and smoky wetsuit each morning. The 15 minute walk in the surf booties down to our regular break (Pt [...]
Surfing Yakutat, Alaska 2008 – part 3

As you probably figured out, this is the third post reporting on a 7 day surfing trip to Yakutat, Alaska. Part 2 was the story for Sept 28th. Something happened between that day and October 1st. Or, what I mean is nothing happened, with the camera that is. I know there was plenty of surfing, [...]
Surfing Yakutat, Alaska 2008 – part 2

Day 2: Looking back through the photo files from 9/28/08 there’s nothing for the morning session, must have been rainy and the camera was left behind. I think we surfed Pt Carrew at first light. Back to camp for a tanner crab lunch, cheers Iceman! It’s not so bad camping in the rainforest when you’ve [...]
Surfing Yakutat, Alaska 2008 – part 1

If you search online for information about surfing in Alaska you’ll quickly find that Yakutat is by far the most documented location. It seems that this is a case of magazines and newspapers following each others lead, if there is a published story about surfing in Alaska, it’s probably about Yakutat. There are a few [...]
Surfing session – Big Sunday 11/30/08

It was big. It was messy. It was blowing on shore and breaking a half mile offshore. It was fun. The well known and easily accessed beaches here in Homer, Alaska don’t handle a big stormy swell like today’s very well. The set waves were breaking way offshore and the current and foam piles were [...]
