Fall sunrise session

By |October 26th, 2012|

This fall has been not only sunny and gorgeous but has also offered its share of good surf in the Gulf of Alaska. While I can’t say we surfed it all, we did do our best. This particular morning in the gulf I had several good days of 4+ hr sessions behind me, the stars were out, and the tide was right for a sunrise session so I jumped in the water with the camera. Mike McCune, Matt Lukin, and Jeremy Cerutti were enjoying some nice waves as the sun peeked over the mountains. […]

The m/v Milo arrived in Seward, Alaska yesterday evening after four non-stop days of surf and stand up paddle exploration in the Kenai Fiords National Park and Gulf of Alaska. The surf was better than we had expected and we are stoked after discovering three new spots on this trip so far.

Pretty flat here in Kachemak Bay this time of year. Really flat in fact. Take this morning for example – you could see the reflection of the mountains in the water it was so calm.

Land of the midnight SUP

By |March 9th, 2011|

I guess it’s not a once in a life time opportunity . . . Though it feels that way.

This February night was the second time the stars aligned. Two years and two months prior I wrote:

“Once upon a time in a little cosmic hamlet by the sea all the magic ingredients came together. A swell was rolling into Kachemak Bay, the winds were calm, the tide was right, the sky was clear, and it was a full moon.” (Moon Tubes at 2:30am)

Slab GoPro video

By |February 8th, 2011|

If you’ve been following along here you know that we have been taking the m/v Milo out from Homer to discover new breaks on the outer coast of the Kenai Peninsula. We just returned from our fourth trip out there yesterday. This morning I put together a few clips I shot using the GoPro video camera mounted on my SUP paddle. This footage is from our third adventure out to the Gulf and our second time riding this slab wave we’ve named Pop Ups.

SUP surfing Turnagain Arm Boretide – Aerial view

By |January 12th, 2011|

A flat spell at your home break can quickly lead a surfer to reminiscing of rides had in bygone times.

How about that time we had it pretty good last fall?  You know, the sessions with 5 mile rides. The one where you could catch the wave right after breakfast and ride it till lunch. Foot cramps from doing so many turns on the standup board. . . .  That was pretty sweet.
