Just another day surfing in Alaska. . . Not many photos from this morning, I must have been heading into the water myself. Looks like there were some nice waves!

The next post on here is going to be reporting on a recent trip to Seward where we scored some sweet waves.

I just moved to the area. How late in the year is there usually any rideable waves left for Homer? I was wondering if it was worth trying to get a board before next season.

    • Hi Patrick,
We are pushing towards the end of the season here for sure. I don’t keep records but I think it’s safe to say that we don’t expect waves past April, and each session we get in April makes us feel pretty lucky.

I saw a great looking wave near Seward. Clean little right sandspit. Maybe this is where you surfed. A friend mentioned seeing it last summer, doing its thing. Can’t wait to see the photos.

  3. Brian says:

I hesitate to mention it online. I know it is surfed, but not sure with the regularity. If you want to email me at the email address required for this comment, I’d be happy to describe it. I can point you to it very accurately.

    • Hi Brian – we are guessing you are talking about a break called Cadillacs on the inside of Fox Island, in Eldorado Passage. I haven’t surfed it, but friends have had some good waves there before. Sent you en email.

  4. Kevin says:

Ummmm, is winter surfing in Homer something neophytes can do? Other than the temps, is the experience forgiving enough? Or do you have to be an experienced cold-water Kahuna to surf those waves?

    • Hi Kevin – So glad you asked this question today . . .I’m just back from a great surf out on the spit. The most exciting part of it was a friend who has every only tried to surf once before came out and gave it a whirl today. All smiles, not cold, not intimidated, the only thing she had to say was ‘wow, it’s as warm as I was in Hawaii’. I wouldn’t know much about that kind of talk, but it sure was a beautiful day, and a great day for any beginner.

OK, Scott! Right on! I’m going to start gearing up for the 2010 season then! Thanks!!

I think I’m going to need some wetsuit advice…

    • Kevin – buy the new patagonia R4 and tell us if it’s as great as we keep hearing it is. If it’s out of your price range, then get whatever you can that was manufactured in the last couple years with 6mm/5mm/4mm or some combination. I love my 7mm mittens and 7mm booties. I’d suggest contacting Jack at Icy Waves in Yakutat. Very nice guy and gives us Alaskan surfers a good price and cheap shipping.

I am wondering about surfing in the summer, are there good waves? What is the season here in AK? I just moved here from montana and am really looking forward to spending some time in salt water! I have surfed a fair amount on trips south, I do ok, but am sill a beginner. I live in Girdwood, but am willing to travel for waves. Does anyone have any advise about where, when to go? Great website by the way, love the pics and the stories!

    • Kelly – Alaska has more coastline than the entire continental US combined! So of course there are good waves, but the questions is, can you afford to get to them? For waves in the summer I’d suggest Bear Glacier near Seward, Kodiak Island, or Yakutat. A few of these spots are being forecasted by the online surf forecast sites I’ve heard. Homer is dead in the summer.
      Thanks for the kind words.

Hey there! My friend and I are new to the area. We wanted to rent boards for this weekend (April 10, 11, 12). As we found out, no place to rent. We have the suits just need boards. We have both surfed before, but I would consider our skill level to be beginner to intermediate. What we were wondering is if anyone in the Anchorage vicinity, or better yet, on the Kenai Penninsula has a board(s) that we could borrow? We are cool with paying borrower’s fee. Call my phone if you can help us out : (413) 687-2938. Mahalo!

    • Hi Ashley, I think some of us could help you out with the board issue. You provide the waves, we’ll find you boards. Keep in touch, we might be lucky with waves this weekend.

  8. Kevin says:

Bueno Scott. Thanks! 6/5/4 is probably the way to go for me. Unless I poach Junior’s college fund, of course. (The reality is that there’s nothing left in it anyway! OUCH!) Boy, Seward looks fantastic! Any surfboard tips as well? I’ve only surfed on the softtops they have at the surfing schools in Lahaina.

Hey! Love your website! I’m from Seward, and I had heard of people surfing in the bay but hadn’t seen it before. Your pictures are great! I did some surfing in Hawaii, and now you make me wish I had a board for Seward too.
