Iceman surfing in Alaska at sunrise.
Finally back at it here on SurfAlaska.net. Thanks for your patience, and welcome to all the new followers.
We just had a couple nice days of surf in Homer, Alaska over the weekend. I managed to catch some photos and some waves. After a pretty long dry spell for me, I was mostly catching waves, but I was sure to create some new content to bring SurfAlaska back out of the flat spell too. Here are a few shots from a session yesterday morning at sunrise. Mike tells us the best waves were before sunrise and before the moon set. I wasn’t there, so we’ll just have to take his word for it. Judging by this morning’s session, I’ll believe him!
Enjoy!

My buddies and I were complaining about how cold we were in the 56 degree water this morning down here in Southern California! WE’RE WIMPS COMPARED TO YOU GUYS! Great pics – never knew there was such good surf up in Alaska – SWEET! What is the water temp up there??
It’s relative, when the air is 10ºF that 34.5ºF water doesn’t feel so bad.
Great shots as usual Scott. An interesting tidbit passed thru my mind inregards to the tides here which I feel is worth sharing with your readers that have yet to experience the Homer surf scene. The last picture of “walking out of a surf paradise”, shows the surfer exiting on sandy bottom with the water about toe deep. 2 hours earlier when the surfer paddled out, the water was about a foot and a half over his head at the same spot…..definetly makes for “shifting peaks”!
Those shots look an awful lot like the snake pit. I was getting worried about you guys, but it seems some surf finally snaked its way up into the bay. Keep up the lip bashing!
Snake 1.0 – We’ve been too busy surfing to report on it . .Not entirely true, but the last 10 days or so have been very good. It’s strange, the snakepit and the slough bar are all but entirely just memories now, neither one really produces. Yesterday Mike and I actually had some nice waves right in front of the parking lot at Bishops! Keep surfing the pastures.
I just discovered your blog. Great stuff. As a surfer kid, transitioning between my father’s house in Anchorage and my mother’s in Southern California, my eyes were glued to the ocean whenever a road trip took us along it. We drove to Homer a couple times, and I always thought there must be some fun surf. It warms me to see it utilized with such determination. Does the sandbar at the end of the spit shape up at all?
Thanks Brian. About 2/3 out the spit is as far as we surf with any consistency. Bars are always changing so who knows what next winter will bring.
Wicked shots Scott. diggin surfalaska!!.
peace
